This firewall inspects each incoming packet for legitimacy. In order to keep malicious packets from being sent to your wireless network, the WRT1900AC features an SPI firewall. With WPA2, a hacker may intercept a packet, but they won’t be able to access its contents without an encryption key which, unlike in WEP encryption, is very difficult to decipher. ![]() Information is carried over a wireless network in packets. WPA2 encryption is the latest method for encrypting information sent over a wireless network. To securely connect a device, you simply press this button on your router and the corresponding WPS button on the device you wish to connect. Wi-Fi protected setup is access via a small blue WPS button located on the back of the router. Most notably, it includes Wi-Fi protected setup, WPA2 encryption, a Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall and parental controls. The Linksys WRT1900AC not only excels in regards to performance, but also delivers the security features you should expect from a premium wireless router. But perhaps the biggest difference is that while using the 802.11ac standard, your router can communicate with your connected devices simultaneously, making for a fast connection in households with increasing numbers of wireless devices. Additionally, the 5GHz band is compatible with beamforming and the new 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard.īeamforming allows your router to concentrate its signal in the direction of a connected device for a stronger signal. Since 2.4GHz bands have a larger range than 5GHz bands, this is also useful for maintaining internet access across larger areas.ĭue to the widespread use of the 2.4GHz band in everything from cordless phones to microwaves, the 5GHz band often offers cleaner, less congested access to the network. Older devices that do not support 5GHz bands can still connect and access the internet at speeds as good as or better than dedicated 2.4GHz routers. Since I know I had a hard time finding it, I thought it would be a good idea to share my findings. On the older 2.4GHz band, this router is rated for impressive speeds of up to 600 Mbps. Setting that to new speed did the trick! I was all of the sudden getting in WIFI as well. Then this morning, while I was setting up my xbox as a high priority device, I found a settings link, and clicking on that "hidden" link, it took me to a windows with an open textbox called Downstream Bandwidth. Searching online did not help what I found was tons of people complaining about the router instead, go figured. Nevertheless, for the life of me, I could not find any settings that would allow me to up the speed limit. I think it is a powerful hardware, but I am not so sure the firmware is as top notch. I have the first version and so far I am fairly happy with it. I will not focus too much on the details of this router as you can find it online. I was getting the new speed! So the issue was in fact in my router! I grumpily followed that advise, and he turned out to be right. "It should be your router, try connecting to the modem instead", he said. The rep on the other side insisted I should have that new speed and he sees it assigned in the system. I figured I could spend a few minutes and call to inquire about the letter. I was using my wired computer so I could not even blamed WIFI. As it turns out, I did not see any improvement at all. Then last Saturday, while working on my home PC, it occurred to me that I should check my speed and brag about it on twitter. My first reaction was in a form of a "sweet!" but I really did not go and worry about it at once. So I received a letter from my ISP provider announcing that as part of an upgrade on their network, I had been given a free upgrade in speed for the same price I am currently paying. ![]()
